Questions about Limestone Crossing and Life Fulfilling Communities?

Here are some quick answers...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Life Fulfilling Community®?
Limestone Crossing will be a University of Kentucky-affiliated Life Fulfilling Community (LFC) for adults age 62 and older. The Life Fulfilling Community is something that has evolved from the "Continuing Care Retirement Community" (CCRC) concept into a more forward-thinking, advanced approach to life—providing far more options and choices than traditional "retirement communities and CCRCs." Limestone Crossing provides an environment for lifelong learning, optimum health and fitness, creative aging and personal growth. In addition to an upscale lifestyle, the Lexington, Kentucky location coupled with an impressive range of amenities, Limestone Crossing will also offer a comprehensive program that significantly reduces the costs of long term care to its members should the services ever be needed.

The idea of a Life Fulfilling Community interests me—but I'm not sure I'm ready yet. When should I consider Limestone Crossing?
Many are attracted because they have "been ready" for this type of community for years. People who say they are "not ready yet," often still think of age inclusive communities as the stereotypical, "old school" retirement community. The truth is that, as a brand new Life Fulfilling Community, Limestone Crossing is a very different concept. Limestone Crossing provides not only the unique security and Health Assurance Guarantee, but also the maintenance-free lifestyle that enables you to do what you want to do... not what you have to do. You will find that members of LFCs fit a variety of profiles; but as a general rule, they are forward-thinking, positive adults who intentionally choose this path because it best suits the quality of life they are seeking. For some that means continuing to work; for others, it means volunteering in the community, traveling, or pursuing a lifelong passion. LFC members share a commitment to staying healthy and fit, seeking out intellectual stimulation—and living life on their own terms. The university-related Life Fulfilling Community enables that lifestyle.

I have heard Limestone Crossing referred to as a CCRC. What does that mean?
A CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community) is defined as a planned residential community that offers various social and recreational services, housing options and several levels of healthcare services. While the CCRC is an excellent medical model, its focus is primarily on the physical dimension of life's third stage. The Life Fulfilling Community model focuses on what we call The Six Keys to Living Well sm—a holistic personal approach that addresses all of the "Dimensions of Well-Being." Limestone Crossing will offer a full continuum of health services. That includes all private suites in assisted living and private rooms in memory support and private skilled nursing, as well as on-site rehabilitation services. Equally important, Limestone Crossing will also provide a full array of social, educational and recreational services with an emphasis on promoting members' physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Limestone Crossing is initiated by the University of Kentucky. What exactly does that mean?
Limestone Crossing, while not owned by the university, will be fully and directly integrated with UK through a series of affiliation agreements with various colleges within the university. This means that community members will have campus privileges similar to those of university faculty—including access to libraries, athletic facilities and cultural activities. They will also have the opportunity to interact with, mentor and advise UK students, many of whom will work part-time for Limestone Crossing.

Why did UK choose to sponsor a community like Limestone Crossing?
As the President of University of Kentucky, Lee T. Todd Jr. says, "As one of the nation's top public universities, the University of Kentucky is a center of excellence in many areas - medical education, technology, science, and the arts. We have also been recognized internationally for the work we're doing at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging on our campus. There's a logical tie-in for UK to initiate a community for older adults, with the hope that this community will become a 'gold standard' in the industry."

How does UK benefit by sponsoring Limestone Crossing?
Benefits to the university will include affiliation agreements with colleges and schools to provide internships and direct field experience for students—as well as exchange opportunities in the areas of nursing, medicine, health and human performance, and many others. What if I outlive my assets?
As a not-for-profit community, Limestone Crossing is committed—through fund raising and other means—to the corporate value that members will never have to leave the community if their financial position becomes insufficient through no fault of their own.

Limestone Crossing is to be a not-for-profit corporation? Why is that important?
Yes, Limestone Crossing is a not-for-profit corporation with a volunteer Board of Directors who are responsible for ensuring the success of the community and its mission. As a not-for-profit community, Limestone Crossing will be able to access tax-exempt financing, which ultimately lowers the cost of the community to its members. Finally, as a not-for-profit corporation, Limestone Crossing is operated exclusively for the benefit and use of the members who are going to live there.
